Kara Grant is a PEI Olympian who competes internationally for Canada in the sport of modern pentathlon. At 28 years of age, in the prime of her athletic career and with many exciting possibilities ahead, she is exactly where she wants to be in life.
Born and raised in the community of Stratford, Kara was heavily involved in the Island equestrian scene for many years and it was through riding and early training with pony club that she became involved in pentathlon. She first made her mark in 1996 by winning the Canadian Junior National Pentathlon title. A rigorous training regime has allowed Kara to improve her performance each year and she has since won five Senior National Championships.
Riding, pentathlon and a university education ensured that Kara spend 1997-2003 back and forth between Stratford, PEI and Fredericton, NB. Kara graduated from UPEI with a Bachelor of Science in May 2002. Kara spent the next two years training in Quebec City where she found a great training environment and excellent coaching.
Kara had a fantastic season in 2004 including a breakthrough 2nd place finish at the Open African Championships in Cairo, Egypt. This result and a win at the National championships helped Kara qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games.
On August 27th, 2004 Kara competed in Athens, Greece where she placed 22nd in the Olympic Games. The experience in Athens satisfied a life long goal, but has also served to motivate her to keep training and competing over the next four years with the hope of winning an Olympic Gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Kara worked full time for the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic in 2005 in order gain some work experience and save some money. Kara is now back to full time training with new perspectives on life and sport. In 2006 Kara had her best result at the World Championships finishing 9th. This exciting result confirms that she is on the right track as she prepares for the Olympic Qualifications that will begin in 2007. Kara plans to follow an ideal preparation for the next Olympic Games in 2008 and give herself every chance to perform at her maximum potential.
Kara's ultimate goal: To compete at the limit of my physical and mental potential at the 2008 Olympic Games (and in the process win an Olympic Gold Medal!)
